Coastal Defenses:
During the 1900's, the increased attempts by foreign countries to open Japan's borders lead to more coastal defenses. One defense was the fort of Goryokaku. The fort is built in a star shape with a moat around it. The star shape was used so there would be no blind spots for artillery fire. The Moat was an extra measure of defense. Takeda Ayasaburo was the architect who headed the building of this fort. For inspiration he studied european castles. He also built the pentagonal fort of Benten Daiba in Hakodate Bay. (DD 149)
