Brief History
Built under orders of Ieyasu Tokugawa this castle was raised in 1603. It still stands today, and they are planning the first major repair since it resurrection. In 1624 the third Tokugawa shogun expanded castle and grounds. Gardens There are three main gardens at the Nijo castle today. The Ninomaru Garden was constructed during the Edo period from 1603-1868. The Honmaru Garden was built during Meiji period from 1868-1912. The Seiryu-en Garden was constructed in the Showa period from 1926-1989. These garden placed in the top 10 of all of Japan's gardens multiple times. Paintings There are over 3,000 paintings throughout the Castle. Some are original and some are newly commissioned by the Kano school designated to paint more during the great renovation for the Emperor's visit during 1626. (UNESCO) |
